The goal of CAT projects is to provide to experimenters, in particular in automotive sector, but not only, HW / SW Systems variously complex able to simulate, in protected and controlled environment, operating conditions, of the various components of a vehicle or even of the vehicle itself.
These systems are composed by electromechanical, hydraulic and electronic elements. The heart of the Automation System interacts with these elements in order to simulate the working conditions of the tested object measuring its reactions. In this way, the tests have a high degree of repeatability and can be performed disengaged from the rest of the context (Vehicle), or limiting its use in real conditions, for example, during the road tests.
In accordance with these basic concepts, there are test beds for a varied amount and type of technological objects: from vehicles to household appliances, to computers themselves, trains, planes…
Each bench is designed and made according to the characteristics of the test object and the specific type of test to be performed. Thus, the test takes place under conditions of accuracy and simulation as close as possible to the real operating conditions. Sometimes are also simulated conditions of extreme stress to test the ability of the object to respond to design expectations.
The substantial difference between CAT Systems and test systems (“end of production line”), is the ability resulting from the high degree of sophistication and accuracy that allow the execution of tests designed to “characterization” of the DUT or to the detailed measurement of its behavior in simulated environment.
